How It Works

Your BuckeyePass token is part of a process called two-factor authentication. Authentication is a way of validating you are who you say you are. Two-factor authentication uses two factors - something you know and something you have - to prove your identity. For example, you use two-factor authentication with your ATM card. You enter a PIN (something you know) and swipe your card (something you have).

In the case of BuckeyePass tokens, you use an alpha-numeric PIN, which you create when you activate your token, and the 6 digits shown on your token (your tokencode) as a password into a system or application. The combination of these two factors is much stronger than a simple password alone.

How to Request and Activate Your Token

Once you are notified that you are required to use a BuckeyePass token, you can begin the process of obtaining and activating your token.

  1. Request your token: Download the instructions below to help you request your token at the BuckeyePass website (https://buckeyepass.osu.edu).
  2. You receive a confirmation email that your token request has been approved and your activation code, which you will need for the activation process
  3. Pick-up your token at your designated distribution site. Be sure to bring two forms of identification. One must be a photo ID.
  4. Activate your token at https://buckeyepass.osu.edu. Download the instructions below to help you with this process.
  5. Set-up your Security Q&A. These steps are included in the above instructions. It is important you do this. Otherwise, if you forget your alpha-numeric PIN and need to reset it, you will be required to go to the IT Service Desk (25 Central Classrooms Building) and show two forms of ID.

Where to Pick-Up Your Token

Your pick-up location is determined by the user group you belong to. Please review the user groups below to identify where you can get your token.

  • OIT/CIO LAN: 8help staff will make arrangements to have the token brought to you at work in your building. However, if you choose, you may pick your token up at the IT Service Desk (025 Central Classroom Building). Please let 8help know if you choose the latter option.
