BuckeyeSecure Projects
The Ohio State University collects, uses, and stores a variety of personal information, such as name, date of birth, SSN, and address, throughout the university in both paper and electronic form. Information about individual users is retained in every system, application, and device in order to determine who the user is, what the user needs to access, what the user has access to, and what the user is authorized to do.
The SSN and lastname.# are two examples of identifiers the university currently uses to recognize students, faculty, and staff. The SSN has historically been used as a unique identifier, however, today we realize the risk this poses. In addition, the multiple systems and processes for safeguarding and protecting personal information complicate compliance efforts and increase support costs. Educational institutions are vulnerable to identity theft and misuses of identity information.
The highlighted projects are proactively working to reduce the use of Social Security numbers and protect personal information.
