Peer-to-Peer (P2P) File Sharing
Peer-to-Peer (P2P) file sharing is often a convenient way to join a network of potentially millions of users and easily access music, games, or software. File sharing software is frequently free; however, it may pose a risk to your computer and personal information.
1. Check the settings when you install the software.
Check the security settings when you install file sharing software or you could unintentionally provide access to sensitive files on your computer such as tax returns, personal documents, medical records, e-mail messages, or photos. Make sure you are only providing access to the files (and file location) you want to share.
2. Set spyware to scan on a regular basis.
File sharing software can also install spyware on your computer, which then monitors your online activities. Scan regularly to detect and remove spyware on your computer.
3. Use anti-virus software and update it regularly.
Use anti-virus software to protect yourself from viruses you may accidentally download with other files. Also be aware that your anti-virus program may not block files downloaded through file sharing. Check your settings.
4. Be aware of copyright rules.
Copyright is the legal protection of all forms creative expression on any form of media. Be aware when downloading materials that you are not violating copyright laws.
5. Make sure you close your connection when you are finished.
Closing the file sharing window does not necessarily close the connection to the file sharing network. If your connection stays open, it continues the file sharing capability and could increase security risks. Also check the software's settings to see if it automatically opens when you turn on your computer.
